    Carta Marina

This painting is inspired by the first map of the Nordic countries, created by Swedish ecclesiastic Olaus Magnus and initially published in 1539, called Carta marina et descriptio septentrionalium terrarum (Latin for Marine map and description of the Northern lands, commonly abbreviated Carta marina).

The map was created in Rome during 1527–39 by Olaus Magnus. To construct the map, Magnus drew from a variety of ancient sources including Ptolemy's map in Geographia, and contemporary sources such as the work of Astronomer Jacob Ziegler. In addition to cartographic sources, Magnus also relied on the descriptions of sailors and his own observations.

This painting is part of a project called "Terra Incognita". It is about discovery, travel and the beauty of foreign lands. The unknown lands are for me like a dream filled with adventure, dangerous creatures and passion.
I love the idea of great adventure and the thirst for discovery and curiosity about the world and the belief in Marco Polo's 7448 Spice Islands in the Far East. I can imagine the intense excitement and the intellectual ferment created by the knowledge that it was possible to sail 'around the world' and not be lost 'over the edge'. This conquest of the fear of the unknown world, the exploration, the passion, this Age of Discovery in the long period of European renaissance are truly inspirational for me.

Dry pastel and gold leaf mixed media painting, abstract landscape, coastline.
Pastel and pure pigments that is crushed, smashed and smeared on the canvas with the artist's fingers and hands. It is a very physical way of painting.

Kerstin Paillard

Born in: 1977 France
Translation in progress

Kc.Paillard, born in 1977 in Paris (France), grown up in Stockholm (Sweden), is a Franco-Swedish artist who lives in the south of France and works between Nice and Stockholm. She draws her inspiration from her legacy, double culture, Art History, the beauty of nature, the northern and southern light and skies, as well as her emotions and dreams. Her items are like her, at the crossroads of this genuine and warm handicraft that has been decorating the Swedish homes for centuries and an original French piece of art.

She has been painting for several years using dry pastels on canvas. Her work is an abstract dreamlike painting where the colours, the textures and the multiple layers of matter expand to create big fields of colours. Her pictural style is a sensitive and original combination, fluctuating between Abstract Expressionism and Color Field Painting (Helen Frankenthaler, Rothko, Emil Nolde, Degas).

Kc.Paillard has studied Fine Arts in Vallauris (France) for 1 year, in order to get a classic formation. Then she studied Contemporary Art in Nice (France) during 4 years. Eventually, she obtained a Master degree in Art History at the University of Montpellier (France) after 5 years. Her master's thesis were about Graffiti and Street Art (4th year) and Scandinavian Design (5th year).
