  • About the artwork

For his Onigokko series Daijiro Hama gets his inspiration partly from Japanese mythological creatures such as 'yokai', ghost appearances who dominate folk stories and ancient histories. This phantoms are usually well described in these stories, but not depicted leaving space for the imagination. Daijiro Hama's way of working is similar to his mind freespirited. There is no fixed idea, the pencil follows the unconsciousness and the results are incredible.

Could be a wonderful diptych with Onigokko (Monkey), hence its title "Onigokko which means "tag" referring to the children game.

Daijiro Hama

Born in: 2019 Japan
Biography
Translation in progress

Daijiro Hama is an artist from Kyoto. He creates a unique universe in black and white where he mixes abstract and figurative, landscape and character straight from his imagination.

"I would like to describe the world of the void in black and white.

In the empty space, the guidance to the infinite world of the unconsciousness begins. Seeing emptiness is “a manifestation in the depths of ones own existence".

This becomes a phenomenon for us. In other words, it is a way of expressing “profundity". It is a view of the world in which the opposite poles of black and white are unified and are born. It is expressed by the word “moderation". It is the world beyond what is reflected as right and wrong, the presence of life and death, the equality of the north and south pole".
