About the artwork
Layral's pieces are the result of a collaborative work between the artist and his model, up to the direct intervention of the latter in the work... this element gives beauty and soul to his portraits.
Each of Layral's series is the result of a creative process. The creative process of the series INO-ONI is the following:
At first, the artist asks the model to write a text: "make your self-portrait, as honestly as possible". The people are then invited to pose for a photographic portrait standing, half-naked, keeping either their upper body or the lower body dressed. During this meeting the artist and the model talk, and the model may tell other intimate details of their life (which will not be uncovered on canvas).
The artist then paints the model; the visible parts of the body are painted in white and the clothes are painted in colors. During the final step, he sands the surface of the painting removing a layer from the surface. As the portrait is modified and partly deleted, the canvas becomes porous, more fragile and ephemeral and it no longer allows an intervention on the surface, but only in the thickness of the piece. The artist ceases to work on the details and from this point on he works with the energy of the piece.
The loss of material also makes the technical control more difficult. The written description completed by a conversation makes possible the contact of the model with the artist. The text is applied on the back of the canvas. The artist conceives a code that appears on all the works of the series, in relation with the text. The code inscribed on the first work of the series, a self-portrait, is tattooed from the beginning of the series on the bottom of the face, the neck and torso of the artist.
