Sara Chelou

Born in: 1972

France

Sara Chelou was born in Paris in 1972.

She is an urban artist who produces murals in abandoned places that she occupies and questions the city.

Her artworks are inspired by Malcolm X's phrase “By any means necessary" and speak of peaceful activism, of a technique and a style, but also of a lifestyle and a style of expression.

Today, Sara Chelou continues her civic and urban activism by taking part in various events in abandoned places and doing her playful and militant stencils in various areas of Paris, depicting political personalities who have fought and sometimes died for civic rights (and are contemporary heroes). She revives the art of political stencils and works in collaboration with graffiti and tag artists for some of her canvases in order to create a connection between this contemporary urban calligraphy and the history of art.

Her style comes from the mix of her visual explorations and a search for meaning, reminding us of a primitive abstraction of the evolution of our societies, all the while evoking the origins and the birth of civilization as well as a reflection on memory, the representation, the meaning and the place of icons in our collective memory.
