Born in Padua in the North of Italy in 1991, Umberto Alizzi has always been interested in visual art. Inspired by the great masters of Pop Art like Andy Warhol and Mimmo Rotella, he worked to develop his own style in the hopes of one day creating canvases which were as instantly recognisable as those of his idols. Most notably he took up a form of collage, or what he termed 'décollage' or 'anti collage', a way of reimagining standout works from the 20th century. His art seeks to uncover the forgotten charm of a long established image: destruction leading to recreation. He stands out largely thanks to his unusual choice of canvases, which include disused billboards, offcuts of wood and old posters, to guarantee a vintage vibe.
Alizzi creates all his work by hand and without any kind of order; each one is totally unique and represents a complete piece of art in and of itself, as well as authentically representing the desires and the state of the artist in the moment of creation. He uses an extensive array of bright colours and whilst each canvas is totally different from the next, there are certain motifs which recur throughout his oeuvre. He frequently depicts pin-ups, icons such as Marilyn Monroe, superheroes such as Wonder Women, or cartoons like Mickey Mouse and friends. His work also often contains reference to other artists who he finds inspiring, such as the prominent cubist Pablo Picasso, the photographer Robert Doisneau, or even the tearaway offshoot of neo-expressionism, Jean-Michael Basquiat. He also makes sure not to leave out his fellow street artists, and so the likes of Keith Haring are also featured. Banksy's works were specifically highlighted in a series of tributes which used a number of his best known motifs, like the famous rats or the little girl with the balloon.
