Hormoz

Hormoz

Born in: 1980

France

When he was 16, Hormoz became a fan of horror cinema, and he later started to produce super 8 shorts and to paint. After studying literature in University, at the age of 22, he starts taking photos, gets published in the press and takes part in collective shows in New York and Sarajevo. His first solo show is entitled "Trouble de l’identité" (Identity Disorder); he produces a third short, "Les lèvres bleues" in 1997, that is selected by numerous festivals. His images become dominated by a morbid and surreal eroticism. In 2000, Hormoz works as a nightclub photographer for several magazines such as Nova Magazine, e.m@le and De l’air. He plunges into the universe of nightlife that we get to discover in his 2008 feature film “J’ai rêvé sous l’eau” (I dreamed underwater), a drama that tells the story of a young bisexual losing his emotional stability. Released in six countries, the film continues to be shown at festivals. In 2009, his installation entitled "Bestial" is on show at the Nivet-Carzon gallery: it is a visual tale on the man-beast fusion, with their body and their deformities. After 2010, his nightclub images are shown in exhibitions at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, at the Agnès B Gallery and at the Salon de la Photographie. At the same time, a social dimension is added to his approach: his new photo series explores the world of the homeless or the extravagant Bourbon Street in New Orleans. His second long-feature film, “Les pierres crieront” (The Stones Will Cry), is a leap in the void, exploring the emotional and economic precarity.
