  • About the artwork

26/11/2005, Stade de France, match test France/South Africa (26-10).
Dimitri Szarzewski in Yannick Nyanga's arms just before the beginning of the match.

To really appreciate this picture, you have to know the story of these guys, Dimitri and Yannick.
They met in their childhood and grew up at 50 meters from each others. They were like brothers, they made the choice to become brothers. They started rugby together and first good surprise: both of them were really good and became professionals and then they were chosen to play in France team.

This moment, this amazing picture taken by Michel, is just after the hymns of the first match where they played together for France as first team players.

We feel with them all the work and the move made. It's a child's dream which becomes reality. "Dimi, we did it", said Yannick.

By the way, Dimitri scored thanks to Yannick this day.

Michel Birot

Born in: 1953

Michel Birot came from fashion and documentary photography (Réalités, Dépêche Mode, Biba, 20 ans and Figaro Magazine). But as early as the 1990s he started a personal project following a rugby school. It was to be his first exhibition on the subject.

From 1995 on, he covered the World Rugby Cup in South Africa for the French newspaper, Libération, as well as several Five Nations Championships. The shift was made and his new career began. It reached its peak with the creation of Attitude Rugby in 1998, a glossy, large format, quarterly magazine in black and white which became the setting to showcase his own work as well as that of the photography greats he invited along.

He has left behind a grandiose body of work, an eternal homage to this sport and the men that play it.
