    Artwork sold in perfect condition

The Jamaica collection is part of a photo essay created in 2011 with Marc Ismail, a reggae producer and Odile Meylan’s partner. Together they visited Kingston, one of the world’s most violent cities, to photograph old theatres and cinemas. These sprang up in the 70s and 80s, the golden age of reggae music inspired by Bob Marley. The areas where these establishments can be found have since become ghettos that are so dangerous that their original inhabitants have abandoned them. In order to take these photos, Odile had to be accompanied by a local artist who lives there, Prince Allah, as well as by Seymour, a taxi driver.

Odile Meylan

Translation in progress

Born in Lausanne in 1972, Odile Meylan started off as a primary school teacher but it wasn’t long before she felt the need to do something more challenging. So, she put down her chalk, picked up her rucksack and set off to travel the world. When she got back to Switzerland she bought her first reflex camera and took up photography. Initially self-taught, her enthusiasm led her to start taking evening classes and she worked as an assistant to several photographers before completing her training at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York. In 2002 Odile was taken on by the daily 24 Heures and ended up taking thousands of photos for the paper. At the same time, she collaborated on many projects, producing reportages from all four corners of the globe for the magazine Animan as well as the NGOs Medair and Terre des Hommes.
