  • About the artwork

The special element of a photograph taken in a rear-view mirror is the same as that taken in a mirror, if the object itself is visible. It offers a “mise en abîme” and sometimes an additional suggested movement.

In ""Deux arbres"" (Two Trees), four sequences are depicted together: a reflection of what is behind, in two parts, the image of what is in front and the rear-view mirror, which can be considered the “zero point”. This technique offers the possibility of having two views, sometimes without an apparent link, a rear perspective on a given plan that offers a reversed depth of field.

In this case, the mirror divided in two overlapping parts multiplies this impression of a distortion of the points of reference. If we compare the image with a painting, one could think of the lower part of the mirror as a predella which is a story in the story, a follow-up, an additional link... The background does not claim its importance and does not compare itself with the image in the mirror. The image behind the rear view mirror is no other than the highway itself, it does not seek to open a perspective on a landscape in which the second image would integrate as a window to another visual dimension. The magic of the superposition is effective though, and a play of white broken lines articulates artificially.

The artist is trying to tell a brief story, an emotion: ""Two trees lost, stripped, disembodied, side by side. Between heaven and earth, between the lines and the speed, under the sunset, they have become unreal. A melancholy of the season, a solitude that tells their love story… I am touched. It is simply beautiful."

Feng Hatat

Born in: 1976

Born in China (Hubei) in 1976, holding an economics and management degree, Feng Hatat is married and lives in Reims.

A professional photographer since 2005, she founded the Rêve-Ville (Dream-City) agency with Alain Hatat. Her favorite means of expression are centered on the reportage, the illustration but also portraits of creative people.

She observes things quietly, and then she captures them with her camera. She likes to experiment with new angles. She always makes sure that her photographs tell a story. She is passionate about creating a set for her characters. She meets them more often ""off stage"", when they go behind the scenes, in unusual settings, in natural light. Curiosity and the aesthetics are her main guidelines.
