  • About the artwork

In the style of a personal diary, this photographic series show Zaida Kersten's journey on the island of
Lenje, on the lake Inari in Finland, in the province and the region of Lapland.

    “Winter, 2011.

My life demands solitude and isolation. I decide to take refuge in a wooden hut without water nor electricity, in the middle of the white snow desert in the Finnish Lapland, 300km in theNorth of the Arctic Circle. The temperatures oscillate between -15°C and -25°C. Days are short but every hour is endless. The nature I discover on Lenje perturbs the beauty and inspired me a big respect. The surrounding cold and silence are merciless. The light is blinding white and infinite.

I am very afraid. I knew that this journey would be an extreme one, but I never had imagined that the most difficult would be the confrontation with myself, to face my internal ghosts which begin to go out and to watch for me. No excuse. I can make nothing else than "face". The fight is endless and opens many scars. I feel alone and distraught.

The silence oppresses me more and more until the madness. I cry until the exhaustion, want toroar but then, I don’t have voice anymore. The silence devoured me and I don’t hear myself any more. It is a kind of liberation. I feel that I am one with the white desert and I give way to the full, infinite serenity. Finally I accept, I am only the present...

I am quiet, I am silence.”
