Rory Carnegie’s ‘Long Ago and Far Away’ is a painterly portrait series of animals exploring the themes of relocation, habitat, identity and belonging, and what it means to be indigenous.

Fascinated by the work of masters such as Albrecht Durer, Rembrandt, and George Stubbs, Carnegie stretches and conflates the concepts of local and alien, by juxtaposing portraits of the animals taken in the studio with digitally layered images of landscapes, taken in different places familiar to him, or in the same place (Port Meadow in Oxford), but from different viewpoints or seasons.

The eerie and elegant outcome is reminiscent of nineteenth-century oil portraits of animals; however, by exploiting photography's supposed ability to capture reality, the ‘Long Ago and Far Away’ series introduces elements of irony and explores the boundaries between separation and integration with the environment.

Rory Carnegie

United Kingdom Born in: 1962

Rory Carnegie is an internationally renowned photographer whose work offers social commentary and insight through contemporary documentary portraiture & hyper-stylised modern editorial. His portraits ask many questions. His versatility and sheer intelligence in approach create both breath-taking, stylishly humorous and engaging pieces that transport the viewer.

Rory Carnegie recent series Long Ago and Far Away takes inspiration from Oxford's Port Meadow. It is a body of work that explores relocation, identity and belonging. Reflections on the work of Durer, Rembrandt and Stubbs led Carnegie to an interest in the apparent disconnection between animals and their habitat. How artists had historically represented animals which they might not have seen, or not seen in 'the wild' led him to question what a natural habitat actually meant.
