  • About the artwork

The work is delivered with an audio device.

"Time as material of the artistic creation. We all live in time. (...) Pliny recounts that the first work of art belonged to a potter's daughter. On the wall of her room, she draw the silhouette of her lover, the night before he went to war. Art was born from this image of love, a moment in eternity, to save something from dying.

And yet, the history of the art is marked by a crucial distinction between the arts of time, music, dance and poetry and the arts of space: painting, sculpture, architecture and photography. Not all art fights against time. (...) In Aurore de Sousa's work there is a synthesis of time and space, reminding of the origins of cinema. There is a kiss, that marks a moment. But the decomposition of movement seems to stretch this moment almost to infinity. From one image to the other, the difference seems imperceptible. But little by little, the beings start embracing each other. We can easily imagine that between two successive images of this series, we can stretch time again and deconstruct it in 15 new images.

The image of a kiss has always evoked the repetition of love stories. These images also refer to a love story between these two characters from Murnau's film. The photographer is the one that captures the characters' love. Therefore, this is the moment love is born again.

This love does not belong to a specific time, or to specific characters. It repeats itself ieverywhere and always. It is an image of eternal love. Aurore de Sousa's work is plastic and visual, but, like music, it also has pace and repetition. During the time that we spend seeing and listening to this artwork, ithe artist invites us for a different experience of aesthetic contemplation."

    - Laurent Bachler, January 2013.

Aurore de Sousa

Born in: 1959

Aurore de Sousa was born in 1959 in Portugal. She lives and works in Grenoble. Aurore de Sousa has had shows regularly since 1996, in France and abroad. She has studied at the Grenoble Art School.

Influenced by the Land Art movement of the '70s, she addresses photography by exploring issues such as the act of walking and landscape. This experience is decisive and, in 1991, she decided to devote herself to photography. She has also created portraits and was interested in the female body. From 1994 onwards, her work is focused mainly on a poetic approach on themes such as identity, memory, and time, which she develops through several photo series.

In 2005, during a photographic residency in Lisbon she had the opportunity to explore the relationship between urban and intimate space. Since 2009, she has been focusing on series of photographs that question the poetic of gardens and of the body.
