    An iconic black and white documentary photograph, a classic contemporary portrait of one of the most influential African American personalities and civil rights activists from the 1960s, known as MLK or Martin Luther King by Leonard Freed.

    Stamped (photographer's copyright stamp) and numbered (on back of photo) by the estate, this is a 13" x 19" black and white archival pigment print of Martin Luther King Jr, Baltimore in 1964. The print is edition 1/10 and signed by the estate, the photographer's widow Brigitte Freed.

Leonard Freed

Born in: 1929 United States

Born 1929 in Brooklyn, New York, Leonard Freed worked as a freelance photographer from 1961 onwards. Magnum photographer Freed traveled widely, photographing African Americans in America (1964-65), events in Israel (1967-68, 1973), and the New York City police department (1972-79). Freed's coverage of the American civil rights movement made him famous, but he also produced photo essays on New York (Harlem), the Italians (Italy), and Germany. 

Leonard Freed died in 2006.
