  • About the artwork

    Artwork sold in perfect condition

Hassan Hajjaj's work is a form of celebration of the popular visual culture. The artist borrows from Moroccan culture, uses pictorial stereotypes such as odalisques or brand images with their cult logos. It is with audacity that he assembles and opposes oriental and western elements, to create a rich and universal universe. The attention Hassan Hajjaj takes in framing his photos is reminiscent of the degree of finishing touches in the repetition of the motifs of Islamic decorative art.
His work evolves between several artistic universes: photography, fashion, music, cinema and design.

His works have joined renowned collections including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (United States), the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (United States), the Institute of Islamic Cultures in Paris ( France), the Victoria and Albert Museum (United Kingdom), the Barjeel collection (United Arab Emirates)…

The artist benefited in 2019 from a major retrospective at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie.

Hassan Hajjaj

Morocco Born in: 1961 Famous artist

Hassan Hajjaj was born in Larache, Morocco in 1961.

A photographer, designer, and filmmaker, Hassan Hajjaj is one of Morocco's preeminent international artists, sometimes called his native country's answer to Andy Warhol. Entirely self-taught and influenced by a mix of London's hip-hop and reggae scenes and his North African heritage, 1961 has a diverse practice that includes portraiture, installation, performance, fashion, and furniture design.

He is best known for his photography, a medium he turned to in the late 1980s and in which he draws influence from Pop Art, fashion photography, and the studio work of Malick Sidibe. His recent work centers on “rockstars," capturing a range of international musicians and performers in exquisitely composed, radically ornate portraits (and in a film that debuted at LACMA).
