In psychology resilience is the ability to overcome traumatic shock. In the arts, one object particularly symbolizes this ability to recover from a traumatic event: Japanese Kintsugi ceramics. The story is that a Japanese emperor who had broken one of his favorite bowls into pieces asked ceramists to fix it. The latter returned the object, reconstituted with gold to fill the cracks. Thus the bowl, after fracture then repair had been magnified. His fracture, or should we say his sorrows had given him a new beauty. This beauty Pierre Lan felt it at the sight of a wall by the sea where he spent his days with his friends as a child. Eroded by tides and bad weather, the wall had been destroyed and then finally reconstituted using plaster and tar. This series of paintings was inspired by its particular aesthetic. Through this work the artist wishes to convey the idea that we can come out stronger and sometimes grow up from certain bad experiences.

Pierre Lan

France Born in: 1988

Pierre Lan was the winner of The Open Window with his friend the director Pierre Jaffres. His work has been exhibited at Espace 29, at the Bernard Magrez Institute and at the Maison des Arts in Pessac. Pierre Lan is a multimedia artist who lives and works in Bordeaux. His work includes video, photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, installations. At the age of 20, he went to the other side of the world in search of experiences. There, he spends his time in museums in contact with works of art and very quickly he understands what he wants to do with his life: to create, to be an artist. With a double master's degree in Art History and Fine Arts, he worked as a broker in works of art for two years before being today Art-therapist. His artistic universe deals in particular with the links between art and psychoanalysis, the dream and the unreal, the visible and the invisible, poetry, literature, and is inspired by the creation of German romantics, symbolists, surrealists, but also by that of great masters of the seventh art such as Malick, Tarkovski, or contemporary artists such as Cyprien Gaillard or Benoît Maire. He considers that art is a point of access to a better understanding of Man, and more generally of the world. Indeed, underlying the creation of each of his works is a work of observation, of investigation on Man and his emotions.

“Art is a non-verbal, universal language that awakens our senses and gives us answers about the emotions that animate our person; answers that reason alone cannot offer us. When words seem insufficient to describe the complexity of an emotion, of a feeling, the work of art gives us the chance to express them by materializing them, while preserving their unity."
