    Artwork sold in perfect condition

Belgian artist Carmen De Vos is a slow photographer. She records, depicts and invents strange stories. She shoots Polaroids to frame these mental escapades, they get so easily out of control. She longs for what she is afraid of losing: real human contact, the slowness of being and creating, the tangibility of materials.

Almost without exception, she uses an old Polaroid camera, long-expired film, and homemade filters. Its tools and methods - like laundering and deliberately obstructing the film - are not precise and are not even geared towards perfect representation. They often yield results - such as colorization, warping, blurring - that she could never have predicted with certainty from the forehand, as their flaws do not allow for calculation. She's not in control. She fights the material. She plans, stages and directs, but rotten chemistry and unfocused lenses add their magic. Alone. Which happily surprises her. Or ruin his image. This battle attracts her as much as it frustrates her. She likes to create within these limits, to try to produce the best possible image under the given narrow circumstances. Fortunately, she loves blemishes.

She once found herself guilty of artisanal misdeeds for TicKL, her English pornographic art magazine Polaroid. She never really healed from wickedness. She can't help but return to those blessed days of free love photography with her Polaroids.

Carmen De Vos

Belgium Born in: 1967

Carmen De Vos (° 1967) is an independent experimental photographer with a penchant for imperfections. She began to photograph several years ago and especially with the Polaroid. "Almost without exception, I use old Polaroid cameras, long-term expired films and self-made filters. My tools and methods - such as film bleaching and deliberate film obstruction - are not are not even oriented towards a perfect representation, and they often give results-such as coloring, deformation, shadow-that I could never have predicted with certainty because their imperfections do not make it possible to calculate.

She always records, portrays and reflects strange stories. She is now working on a new photo novel and a portrait of Flemish women. "Polaroid adds a physical story to the image by itself, and the limited technical capabilities of my equipment restrict me to find my way within these limits and inconsistencies frustrate me as much as it challenges me."

Her work focuses on portraits and an approach to eroticism that is often provocative and blasphemous.
