Nadine Bénichou

Born in: 1963

France

Her photographic work is not about documenting the world as it is. Instead, she tires to challenge our perception habits by showing strange, abstract and textured images. It is her way of questioning our nostalgic quest for authenticity and our belief that photography, unlike cinema, has to show a faithful representation of reality. Painting is where her artistic work began, which probably explains why she does not see photo edition as cheating, but simply as a possible tool in the creative process. Nadine Bénichou's taste for pocket formats and instruments led her to mobile photography (photography with a smartphone), a controversial form of art since it democratizes the darkroom. She particularly likes this mobile tool which both challenges our conception of art and technique and allows a better snap of urban dynamics. She considers mobile photography as an outsider form of art: experimental, spontaneous, creative and free of dogma. Her work has been exhibited many times on solo and collective shows. She is one of the Mobile Camera Club co-founders.
