Eric Fischl

Born in: 1948

United States

Eric Fischl is an American painter and sculptor, born in 1948 in New York. His parents moved to Phoenix in 1967 so it was in Arizona that Fischl started to have an inclination towards art. Having a degree from the Institute of Arts of California in 1972, he moved to Chicago where he worked as a guard in a museum. He currently lives in New York. At first, he was inspired by American society and their addiction to work. He depicts subjects such as alcoholism, a taboo subject but of actuality in the US. The critics were severe about his creations at first, saying that producing art from the representation of suburbs and subjects of daily life was not possible. However, Fischl's work gradually became recognized over the years, giving the artist an international reputation. He has created a countless number of sculptures, paintings and drawings with a variety of subjects. Fischl's work has been object of numerous exhibitions and certain are still present in famous museums such as at the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Los Angelos, the Beaubourg Museum in France and the Museum of Art of Denmark.
