Untitled is an original etching realized by Wifredo Lam in 1966. Hand signed in pencil on the lower right margin, numbered in pencil on the lower left margin; edition of 99 prints. Good condition.

It represents an abstract figure on a yellow background. The style of Lam's painting is a mix of several artistic expressions that the artist met during his foreign trips. His work is characterized by Cubist influences and features similar to those of Graffiti and Surrealist artworks.

Wifredo Lam (Sagua la Grande, 1902 – Paris, 1982) was a Cuban painter. In 1923, he moved to Spain where he has lived for fourteen years. In 1929, he married Eva Piris who died two years later because of tuberculosis. In 1938, Lam met Pablo Picasso and his friends Joan Miró, Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse and Georges Braque. In 1941, he left Europe to move to Cuba with André Breton; during the same year, he was interned for forty days in Martinique Island. At the age of fifty, he moved to Paris where he died in 1982. Wifredo Lam is considered one of the most important exponents of the "Negrism" movement; together with René Portocarrero, he is the most famous artist in Cuba.

Wifredo Lam

Cuba  • 1902  - 1982

Master Artists

Wifredo Lam was born in 1902 in Sagua la Grande (Cuba). He studied Law before leaving his island in 1923 for Spain.

Wifredo Lam joined the Artcollege of Madrid where he would work in the painter Fernando Alvarez de Sotomayor's atelier. His first personal exhibition was organized in 1928. The work of Wifredo Lam was in its halfcaste history (China, Africa, and the Antilles). The artist was notably inspired by Africans who brought in Cuba "their primitive culture, their magic religion, and its mystic aspect".

During the Spanish civil war, Wifredo Lam fought for the republicans. He was obliged to take refuge in France in 1937; there, he met Picasso who helped him to find his place in the Parisian artistic environment and introduced him to his friends (Michel Leiris, Paul Eluard, Tristan Tzara, Léger, Braque, Miro, Christian Zervos, Matisse, etc.). In 1939, he joined André Breton and the surrealist movement.

Wifredo Lam died in Paris in 1982. According to the painter's will, his ashes were transferred in Cuba, where was created in posthumous honoring, the "Centre Wifredo Lam" for the promotion and the study of the Third World-Plastic Arts.
