"Tout ce que vous avez raté", the show to make sure you don't miss anything about contemporary art, is sent free of charge and every week to more than 170,000 subscribers. We met Marc Beyney-Sonier, co-founder, who agreed to answer our questions. Also discover his selection of selected works on Artsper.

Artsper: Your background briefly?

Marc Beyney-Sonier: I did a Master's degree in art history at the Sorbonne, then a Master's degree in journalism at the ESJ: that's where I met Solenne, my partner. I had also previously worked as a press officer in galleries and in production. With Solenne, we wanted to set up a short format on the web where people can quickly access current events in contemporary art.

When I was at university, I had Philippe Dagen as my professor, he urged us to do every conceivable opening. He would almost yell at us if we missed a single one, that's when I realized it was impossible to see and follow everything, so the name of the show "Tout ce que vous avez misé" appeared.

Our job: "popularize" and "democratize" contemporary art, make it accessible and motivating by giving some keys.

Artsper: Why did you choose the video format?

Marc Beyney-Sonier: On the web, there was already a lot of content on contemporary art, with media well established in the artistic landscape, I am thinking in particular of "Toute la culture". As for the existing video formats, there was "Vernissage TV" which covers the international market but not France on a regular basis, or "La semaine de l'art" on LCI which was cancelled during the first season. So we tried the video on the web: ten minutes of broadcasting and very visually catchy content. We spend one to three minutes per topic, no more, it's much more accessible than a feature article. We also chose this format for the simple and good reason that Solenne and I are image reporters, it is our specialty!

Artsper: What are your plans for the future?

Marc Beyney-Sonier: From 2016 to 2017, many projects await us, with other media or in other formats. At the moment, we have only one bias: "Tout ce que vous avez raté" is not destined to be broadcast on television. Why? Because the web format allows Internet users freedom, it can be easily integrated into their schedules.

Our objective is to keep a coherence in what we defend: above all, not to be elitist in contemporary art. So we work with media that have the same vision as us, such as Radio Nova. We would like to show that gallery owners and artists are accessible and answer questions. I think the best way to decode contemporary art, sometimes confused, is to meet the professionals. We meet them at the right time, during openings, and we discuss questions based primarily on their feelings. We also try to ask questions that are accessible to everyone, that a neophyte would be likely to ask. This is particularly the case in our "#FOCUS ARTISTE" section presented by Solenne: she, who has no background in art history, dares to ask the questions our subscribers ask themselves.

Artsper: What is your conception of cultural mediation? Should conceptual art be explained?

Marc Beyney-Sonier: I think there is a balance to be struck. We do not go into details because some media, especially print, are very good at it. Télérama, L'Officiel Art or Beaux Arts explain it perfectly and give the keys in an intelligent way. Very good journalists write for these magazines, I follow them very closely so as not to miss any information, it's a perpetual relationship!

In our programs, our main mediators are the exhibition commissioners. My comments remain very narrative, the mediation is done directly by the stakeholders. For example, the whole issue of our last issue on Drawing Now: "What are the limits of contemporary drawing? ", it is not me who answers it, it is the people interviewed.

Artsper: So you are complementary to a classical media?

Marc Beyney-Sonier} : Exactly! It would have been pretentious to want to create another medium to dissect contemporary art when there are already many of them. Instead of positioning ourselves as a competitor, we have made ourselves complementary.

I am totally passionate about contemporary art and I want to share this passion with others. The first victory was that of my partner Solenne, a novice in contemporary art: the further the project progressed, the more she became a fan.

Artsper: What is your editorial line?

Marc Beyney-Sonier: The program is divided into three parts: "#VERNISSAGES" with two or three openings per program, "#L'EXPO DE LA SEMAINE" in an institution or a museum, and the "#FOCUS ARTISTE" where you meet an artist in his studio.

The editorial line has always been this: we cover the major events of contemporary art, but we also discover young galleries and young talents with less media coverage. Our work is also to find new talents, young emerging artists to make our subscribers discover them. Among our subscribers, we have collectors, it is interesting to know that thanks to our show, a collector discovers a young artist to eventually acquire his work.

Artsper: Why did you accept a partnership with our platform? What are the parallels between TCQVAR and Artsper?

Marc Beyney-Sonier: We have been following Artsper from the beginning, delighted that there is finally a French digital platform selling contemporary art in an intelligent way. Artsper's values are in line with the editorial line of our program. The selection is relevant: heads of posters, emerging artists or young talents. You also follow the same events that we cover on our side. It made perfect sense to work together.

Artsper positions itself between the market, profitability and consulting. We also feel that the advice line takes precedence over the profitability line, which is also what we liked about you. Your vision is to defend contemporary art and allow everyone to have access to it, to become a buyer. If I want to buy a work or offer one, it's through Artsper: all scholarships can be found.
