Cities

Cities may evoke conflicting feelings; they fascinate as much as they overwhelm, attract, or distress. For this reason, they have often been privileged by artists who are able to draw an much inspiration from them. They are linked to art history, and although art existed long before the emergence of the first cities, but it developed alongside civilisations and reached its height when cities fully expanded.

Cities, with their art museums, galleries, and various artistic institutions, are indeed the centre of artistic creation (for example, the Beaux-Arts' Academic Salon was created in the late 17th century and took place in Paris). Artists in the making fill up these urban centres, trying their luck in the big city. The latter is a significant source of inspiration because it represents a beacon of hope. The young anonymous artist arms himself with his brushes, his camera, his artistic talent and can follow the footsteps of the greatest masters or perhaps create something entirely new. Painters, sculptors, writers, photographers, actors, directors rub shoulders, creating a vibrant and inspiring artistic effervescence, a hotbed of ideas and inspiration.

Some artists have dedicated their whole work to the city. Edward Hopper, for example, attained the height of his art when he focused on atmospheres and lifestyles which defined the American citizen. The cities' development also raises questions: do cities inspire art, or does art inspire cities? Are cities mediums (as seen with street art) or places of creation? With their constant evolutions and the sense they give of never stopping, never sleeping,  cities fascinate the creator's sensitive gaze. Cities also mirror changes in society as generations and customs evolve.

Contemporary art treats cities both as a support and as a place. Today, artworks can be seen all over towns or big metropolises, and sculptural creations are showcased at many street corners. Even though the city's intimidating crowds may be stressful for some, their chaos remains an inspiring motif for artists.

Lastly, a new movement created by the city for the city appeared in the 20th: street art. It latter art with the city: street art exists with city walls, in fact the walls become canvases. Many artists, like the famous Banksy, have given a new meaning to the cities we thought we knew.

New York, Paris, Hong Kong, Bombay; they are all sources of inspiration for artists. Each of these cities offers a unique atmosphere and colour palette. Explore our selection of works by artists who represent cities, urban life and modernity.
