Skadi Engeln is an experienced German painter whose work has received international recognition. Between 1987 and 1988, she studied under Essen-based painter Hermann Baldenbach. From 1990 to 1995, Engeln attended the University of Applied Sciences in Ottersberg, where she honed her skills in sculpture under Robert van de Laar and studied painting with Michael Kohr and Hermanus Westendorp. Today, she is a freelance artist based in Berlin.
Since 2001, Engeln has delved deeply into abstract landscape painting. Her works are characterized by stripes and lines that hint at hidden depths and underlying structures. Since 2016, she has expanded her exploration to include figurative elements, investigating the interplay between landscape and human form, nature and humanity.
Engeln’s landscapes often seem obscured, as though hidden behind a veil, woven through with lines and stripes that invite curiosity. Her process involves serial work in various techniques—tempera, chalk, ink, graphite on canvas, screen printing, lithography, and woodblock printing—creating a photographic effect reminiscent of travel diaries.
Engeln’s works have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Berlin, Düsseldorf, Bonn, Hamburg, Munich, Paris, Graz, and Molde.
