7,439 MILES TO (RE) DISCOVER AMERICA! Crossing the United States from east to west is undoubtedly the "road trip" par excellence in the collective unconscious and for photographers a perilous challenge as it has been the favorite subject of the greatest artists, from Robert Frank to Jack Kerouac. In 2015, the Italian photographer Renato d'Agostin decided to take up this challenge, hit the road in his 1983 BMW and traveled the 7,439 miles that separate New York from Los Angeles, developing his films as the stages went, transforming his rooms from hotel in dark rooms. From this initiatory journey Renato D'Agostin will create a luminous and contrasting series, breathtaking with grace and subtlety: “7439”. It was in Venice, where he was born in 1983, that Renato D'Agostin began his career as a photographer. In 2001, he borrowed his father's device and explored his familiar universe, discovering new ways to sublimate the Serenissima. Inspired by the atmosphere of urban life, he then crisscrossed the capitals of Western Europe and after a stint in Milan where he worked for the Maison Sabbatini studio, he flew to New York. In 2005, he took courses in fine art prints at the International Center of Photography (ICP) and for a time was Ralph Gibson's assistant. Dissociating his subjects from their own reality, Renato D'Agostin opens up new avenues in the viewer's imagination by reinterpreting the relationship between man, space and matter. For Thierry Bigaignon, “Renato D'Agostin is a born explorer. He captures visual elements that most of us don't notice, and puts a unique mark on each of his shots. A fine technician, Renato D'Agostin knows better who anybody else can add to the classicism of black and white film a contemporary vision of the world ”. And to add: "His photographs, charged with abstraction and surrealism, are strong and delicate at the same time". Renato D'Agostin's work has been published in numerous books, the most recent of which, "Proxemics" (The (M) éditions), has just won the prize for best photographic work at the Night of the Book 2017. His photographs are part of prestigious public collections, including the Library of the American Congress, the Phillips Collection (Washington), the Center for Creative Photography (Arizona) and the European House of Photography (Paris). His series have been the subject of numerous exhibitions in the United States, Europe and Asia for 10 years. The "7439" series is presented for the first time in France from May 13 to September 9, 2017. 28 original black and white silver prints, signed and numbered (size 32x48 cm, edition limited to 25 copies and 67x100 cm, edition limited to 5 copies).
