Belgian draftsman known for his iconic comic series and architectural projects, recognized with the Grand Prix in Angouleme.

Biography

François Schuiten is a Belgian draftsman, born in 1956. His first comic book called "Mutation" was published in the Belgian edition of the Pilot magazine, when he was only sixteen years old. Following this, he studied comics at the Saint Luc Institute in Brussels in Claude Renard's workshop. After graduation, he created the cycle of « Terres Creuses » with his brother. 1980 onward, he build the series « Les Cités Obscures » with Benoir Peters. In 2002, he was awarded for his work and received the supreme dedication for all cartoonists, the Grand Prix from the city of Angouleme. « Les Cités obscures » was translated in ten languages, it received several awards including the Manga Grand Prix at the Japan Media Arts Festival in 2013.

While working as a cartoonist, François Schuiten also got involved in architectural projects. He is mostly known for the one created at "Arts et Metiers" metro station in Paris. He also designed stages for several opera and dance performances but also designed stages for several movies, such as « Mister Nobody » by Jaco Vandormael. Moreover, he designed pavilions for several universal exhibitions like the pavilion of Luxembourg in Seville,Utopian theme park in Hanover and the Belgian pavilion at global exhibition of Aichi, in Japan. From time to time, he participates in projects pertaining to posters, stamps and illustrations. Last but not least, for about ten years, he invested in designing the museum "Train World" in Schaerbeek.
