Edgar Quispe
Bolivia • 1982
Presentation
“In my work I try to capture the spirit of the people, objects, landscapes, and the reality that surrounds us, inspired in the postulates of my individual surrealism, which triggers my imagination. Art has no limits, and when it does, it is then when freedom and creativity are restricted, therefore, in some of my works I fuse reality with fantasy or abstraction, or at least that is what I intend to do"
Edgar Quispe.
Born in 1982, he studied fine arts at the School of Arts and Architecture of the Major University of Saint Andrew, in his hometown, La Paz, Bolivia. Since his graduation he has exhibited constantly in major galleries and institutional halls throughout Bolivia, and abroad, in Costa Rica, Peru, Mexico and the USA. His works have earned him multiple awards and recognitions, among them the “Illimani Price" at the International Encounter of Watercolorists held in La Paz in 2018; the First Place in Painting at the most important award in Bolivia, The National Eduardo Avaroa Award, in 2018; and most recently, the “Pepino de Oro" Grand Price at the VII International Plastic Arts Contest “Light, Form and Color, of the La Paz Carnival" held in February of 2022.
Edgar Quispe follows the legacy of a lineage of watercolorists from the city of La Paz who have developed a very particular Urban landscape style, inspired in the architecture and rough terrains characteristic of the highest city in the world (3869 m above sea level). His other themes explore the symbolic nature of objects charged with cultural meanings, and environmental issues linked to the loss of wildlife and natural resources in the Andean region.
