Presentation

Laurence Winter lives and works near Grignan, in Drôme. After training and professional experience in the fashion sector which took her from Thailand to Tunisia, she returned to her first passions: drawing and painting. For several years, she experimented with all types of support from the classic canvas frame to free canvas, wooden support, leather, paper in all its forms or cardboard in all its formats... until the encounter with metal frames.

It took time to adapt to this new material, with which it continues its path today. The controlled combination of oil paint, a very contemporary medium and that "je ne sais quoi" specific to her work and we obtain this very particular rendering that characterizes her.

"My painting is not figurative in the sense that my gaze seeks to go beyond reality... My painting is not abstract because the eye can cling to a reality" - Laurence Winter

"I have worked on supports of all kinds, from the classic canvas frame to the wooden support, leather, paper in all its states or cardboard in all formats... and also coated canvas, free and without chassis… I looked on these supports for different sensations and matches between materials and subjects: I wanted the material to come with me… Sometimes I found, sometimes I failed but each time, I learned…

In 2012, during an exhibition in a stone quarry, I decided to make my first metal frames. I was interested in working around this alliance between the mineral of the place and the metal of the supports: I was looking for an echo, a resonance... something both very "raw" but also "soft" but without being "cold". »…

It was necessary to adapt the technique and the gesture so that the color "rings", while keeping depth... The metal brings another dimension and the gesture follows as well in the form as in the amplitude.

My painting is not figurative in the sense that my gaze seeks to go beyond reality... My painting is not abstract because the eye can cling to a reality...

But do we have to choose? Because the work will go it alone with the complicity of the eyes that will know how to look at it...."
