Presentation

SoRi (Sophie Richard) is a visual artist born in 1979 in the south-east of France. Always attracted to drawing, her artistic talents soon stood out: at 13, she was given the mission of painting frescoes on the walls of her college, her first opportunity to work in acrylic and inks. .

At 18, she began studying fashion design in Lyon where she discovered her passion for working with materials. The material, precisely, is what awakens her senses, and SoRi admiring the work of Pierre Soulages transmits it to us through her works: textures, patterns, wax fabrics, gilding ... She likes to play with oppositions : smooth / textured, mat / shiny, flat / thick, plain / multicolored ... You only have to look closely at these paintings to feel the call of touch.

Beyond the material, the influence of textile design is also felt in the artist's creative process: from a first original work, SoRi creates a whole series of works belonging to the same collection. As in the fashion world, SoRi organizes her works in the form of "lines" (Africa, Women artists ...). Their common point? The central subject is mainly the human, the body and more particularly the representation of women. painted by a woman, in a still predominantly male art world.

SoRi is not afraid to explore and mix different techniques. His favorite, currently, borrowed from StreetArt and influenced by his contemporaries such as Miss Tic, C215 and Raf Urban, is the stencil. With this, she sometimes associates Textile Art by directly sewing the fabrics on the canvas and the application of gold leaves reminiscent of Gustav Klimt, or the marouflage that she had discovered in the reference work of Alechinsky; variation of support also, such as cardboard ... the main thing is that the alchemy between them operates and arouses a desire to caress the work that can go as far as a certain sensuality.

Beyond the visual, SoRi is in search of meaning. What does such fabric tell? Wax, for example, each of the patterns has its own meaning; the motif called "If you go out, I go out" and illustrated by birds coming out of their cage symbolizes the equality between man and woman. In the triptych Frida Kahlo, artist whom she admires above all for her freedom and her strength, there is the main subject and if we look more closely, we discover in the graphics (typed Keith Haring) extracts from the life of this painter or symbols related to the character. Thus, SoRi often offers works with double reading.
