Presentation

Self-taught artist, Laurent Lecuelle was born in 1966 in Burgundy, where he lives.

Painted cardboards, exhibited during a retrospective of Bernar Venet in Lyon in 2018, challenge him and make him want to work on this medium ... but, in relief.

In abstraction and flirting with compression, he cuts, assembles, folds, tears, and juggles the different grooves, thicknesses, and compositions of the cartons he selects as a couturier chooses his fabrics. However, he only uses used cardboard boxes because he is keen to keep technical and logistical traces, which tell of trade, travel, and stories. Then, it is with the spray paint that he finalizes his work.

During its first tests, the light was essential immediately.

“Cardboard is ideal for providing a real playground for light, and my choice of monochrome makes it easier to read. The works of Pierre Soulages are my main references. "

He displays a taste for mixing order and disorder, the rectilinear and the torn, the organized and the unforeseen, the refined and the overloaded. "I idealize and like to combine reason and passion, rigor and total freedom."
