Dutch romantic painter John Haanstra was born on November 18, 1945 in Amsterdam. He started drawing and painting as an autodidact at the age of thirteen and immediately had the ambition to become a painter.
Haanstra has been exhibiting at art markets in Amsterdam since he was sixteen. He studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam to further develop his painting technique.
From an early age he had a strong preference for the romantic Dutch school and painted many recognizable old Dutch townscapes of Haarlem, Amsterdam and Amersfoort, for example.
He also immortalized scenes with beach views of Katwijk and Scheveningen from the early 1900s on canvas with great passion.
