Presentation

Sudanese painter and illustrator.

Femininity is very important in the works of Amel Bashier; women are for her an inexhaustible source of inspiration, she represents them without prejudice. They embody mixed feelings like strength and weakness, cruelty and compassion. The women she paints are at the height of femininity, they often evoke motherhood.

As Amel says, her influences are multicultural, however she likes to give an important place to the kingdom of Nubia, where she is from. Women of the Nuba tribe (in northern Sudan) still practice certain rituals that mean a lot to Amel and her art.

She paints and draws mainly in black and white because she considers that these two colors testify to the impatience which she shows when working, but also of a beauty and a natural simplicity.
