India Leire

United Kingdom  • 1990

Presentation

Born in 1990 in Canterbury (England), India Leire arrives in France in 2008 to study at the National Superior School of Fine Arts of Paris. She creates her wonderful world by working in the Guiseppe Pennone workshop, and in the Patrice Alexandre workshop. In 2013, with jury congratulations she obtains her diploma of National Superior Plastic Arts.

India Leire invites the spectator in a world full of fantasy where plants and animals clash: A mystic and magical world inhabited by creatures, plants and original forms. The artist is amused about the fragility of her creations as well as the precise finish that seduces the public. She also proposes to create discomfort and doubt by suggesting a darker dimension, letting the spectator believe the sculptures are real, in all their aggressiveness and instability. India Leire creations are ambiguous; she herself think they are disturbing.

The duality attraction-repulsion is everywhere in her work. The artist is inspired by imaginary worlds: Greek mythology, children's tales, specially Alice in Wonderland from Lewis Caroll but also A Midsummer Night's Dream from William Shakespeare.

India's researches are geared towards issues around sculpture: how to believe in floating? How to create the illusion of motion? The artist plays with the sizes of her creations and creates a sensation of weightlessness. India offers us the sense and interpretation of beauty that is found in nature and ignored in daily life.
