David Shapiro (Brooklyn, New York, 1944, - 2014) David Shapiro was an American multimedia artist best known for his abstractions linked to symbols. His souces of inspiration derived from Buddhism, yoga. He translated these oriental worlds onto burlap, nylon screes, and Japanese papers, creating a textured surface on canvas.

After attending the Pratt Institute, he received his MFA from Indiana University in 1968. Shapiro died in 2014 in New York, affected by cancer. Today, his artworks are held in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the University of Chicago, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others.
