Biography

Sébastien Dominici is a contemporary artist born on July 8, 1978, in Bastia, Corsica. His artistic journey is deeply connected to the surf and skate culture he discovered in his teenage years. As one of the pioneers of surfing in Corsica during the early 1990s, he found inspiration in the visual aesthetics, sensations, and philosophies of these countercultures.

Immersed in a rich visual and musical universe—films, images, music, and iconic figures—Sébastien set out to transpose a unique, free, visceral, and sensory way of life into his art. This immersion also shaped his hands-on approach: in the absence of specialized shops on the island, he learned to work with resin to shape his own surfboards—an experience that would later influence his plastic work.

His travels and encounters with major figures from the surf art scene—Barry McGee, Alby Falzon, Julian Schnabel, Jim Phillips, Craig R. Stecyk III, and Raymond Pettibon—profoundly impacted his artistic vision. By merging these influences with his insular roots, Sébastien forged a singular practice, freed from traditional codes and shaped by contrast and an off-centered gaze.

A multidisciplinary artist, he explores a wide range of media: drawing, painting, resin, installation, photography, video, music. His supports are just as varied: canvas, paper, surfboards, skateboards, and found objects. His recognizable visual language is based on large, assertive (sometimes childlike) drawings and personal symbols—often highlighted by three red-encircled words—serving as visual anchors within layered compositions made of colored fields, textures, and enigmatic annotations.

Sébastien Dominici seeks to capture what surrounds and permeates us, both visible and invisible: our choices, influences, obsessions. His work reflects a desire to materialize the intangible and open a space for reflection on contemporary issues—whether ecological, political, or social.
