icônes
Une icône, “eikon" en grec, signifie image. L'icône qualifie, au départ, les images des martyres et des saints de la religion orthodoxe dans l'empire byzantin. La définition se transforme progressivement et devient iconique tout objet, personne ou marque identifiable en un instant par la majorité de la population.
À l'icône, on prête généralement de grandes qualités allant du talent artistique à l'engagement politique en passant par un sens du sacrifice et de la morale ou un physique très avantageux. Il y a quelque chose qui fait passer une personne de l'anonymat au statut de légende vivante et même morte d'ailleurs, car l'icône passe à la postérité et restera une référence pour les générations à venir. Toutes les générations possèdent leurs icônes, elles reflètent la société, ses considérations, ce qu'elles vénèrent à l'instant et ce à quoi elle aspire.
Les icônes modernes sont ainsi Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Elvis, Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Nelson Mandela, Ghandi… Il arrive que l'icône revête un destin tragique comme une mort soudaine ou jeunesse difficile. On a tous entendu parler du club des 27 (musiciens décédés prématurément à l'âge prématuré de 27 ans): Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix...
Par définition, les artistes (peintres, sculpteurs, écrivains, photographes…) tentent de représenter fidèlement le monde qui les entoure et dans lequel ils évoluent. Les grands maîtres réalisent ainsi au fil des époques, des bustes d'empereur, des portraits de monarques ou d'intellectuels… Depuis le XXème et notamment sous l'impulsion du pop art dans les années 60, le culte voué aux icônes a été amené à tout nouveau niveau.
Pop art vient de “popular art" en anglais, il caractérise une nouvelle forme d'art miroir de la société globalisée et de la culture de masse. Le cinéma hollywoodien, en plein essor alors, inspire donc inévitablement les artistes. En la matière, Andy Warhol reste précurseur. Adoptant les nouvelles technologies, dont la sérigraphie qui permet de reproduire vite et à l'infini des images en couleurs, il offre une nouvelles perspective au monde de l'art et permet au “vulgaire" d'entrer dans les musées. Publicitaire à ses débuts, Warhol connaît le marché et fréquente la haute société et les VIP. Parmi ses oeuvres les plus célèbres, on retrouve notamment le portrait de Marilyn Monroe, Les Huit Elvis, Elizabeth Taylor… Mais aussi des produits de plus ou moins grande consommation: Les Campbell's Soup Cans, le flacon de parfum Numéro 5 de Chanel, le Macintosh d'Apple. Le génie du pop art produit aussi certains couvertures des plus mythiques de la musique comme les Rolling Stones.
Aussi, la notoriété des artistes grandit et, de plus en plus, ils peuvent eux-même acquérir le statut d'icône. C'est le cas d'Andy Warhol et de sa perruque argentée si emblématique, mais également de Basquiat, Picasso ou encore Frida Kahlo…
En plus du pop art, les artistes font appel à de nombreuses techniques et s'avèrent très créatifs pour rendre hommages à leurs icônes (peinture à l'huile, collage, technique mixte, dessin…). Chamizo, Remy Bond, Claudio Barsus peignent par exemple les icônes du XXème et XXIème siècles dans des styles figuratifs ou plus abstrait?
