Noir et blanc
Avant l'apparition de la photographie et à l'exception de quelques gravures ou lithographies, toutes les images arrivées à notre connaissance sont en couleurs. De fait personne n'aurait pensé peindre en noir et blanc - puisqu'on savait le faire en couleur.
Aujourd'hui encore, beaucoup de photographes font le choix d'un travail en noir et blanc, comme Pauline Théon, Kadir Von Lohuizen ou Jon Lowenstein, alors même que leurs photos sont prises en couleur par l'appareil photo, sans parler du retour aux photos argentiques, effet de mode ou retour aux sources ? C'est donc que le noir et blanc a quelque chose que la photographie couleur, malgré les récentes innovation et la qualité des images aujourd'hui, ne réussira pas à ôter. De fait, les photographies en noir et blanc donnent une force supplémentaire aux compositions : les contrastes, les ombres, les formes ressortent davantage ; et il est vrai que l'émotion est différente devant une photographie en noir et blanc.
La couleur agit comme une distraction en quelque sorte, un perturbateur : la couleur est fâcheuse.
Pourtant, certains photographes la préfèrent au noir et blanc, d'autre mêmes mélangent couleur et monochrome. Mais tous et toutes s'accordent sur ce point : le noir et blanc comme la couleur imposent une certaine posture du regard dès la recherche de la photo, pendant la photo et dans le travail postérieur, lorsqu'il faut développer ou retoucher la photo. C'est donc une démarche à part entière, il s'agit de deux manières différentes de regarder le monde puis de le donner à voir. Il s'agit donc de se poser la question suivante : qu'est-ce qui est raconté, et pourquoi est-ce raconté ainsi ?
La valeur symbolique du noir et du blanc lorsqu'ils sont associés est une bonne piste de réflexion sur cette fascination qu'ils produisent encore aujourd'hui. Le noir, “couleur" des ténèbres et du charbon calciné par trop de lumière, considéré comme une non-couleur, à côté du blanc, lumière et résultat de la fusion entre elles de toutes les couleurs : il ne pourrait y avoir d'ambivalence plus fascinante, plus saisissante.
Le problème est que le noir et blanc demeure encore très largement associé à une époque passée, avant la popularisation de la couleur et sa récupération massive, notamment par la presse et le photoreportage. De fait il est rare que des sujets contemporains soient photographiés en couleur, et l'esprit associe volontiers un univers rétro aux images en noir et blanc.
