Photo reportages
Lorsque Dorothea Lange a photographié Florence Owens Thompson pendant la Grande Dépression des années 1930, elle a créé l'une des images les plus poignantes de l'histoire de la photographie : « Migrant Mother » (1936). En fait, c'est le cas de plusieurs des œuvres de Lange, car la photojournaliste a attiré l'attention du public sur le sort des pauvres et des oubliés. Elle dira plus tard de ce moment que la mère ne lui a posé aucune question, mais semblait savoir que les photos pourraient l'aider, et qu'elle a donc accepté de poser pour Lange. Ces photos journalistiques ou « photojournalisme » sont l'utilisation du médium de la photographie pour raconter une histoire, en capturant une représentation visuelle de ce qu'un journaliste transmettrait autrement par ses écrits. Grâce au travail de photojournalistes comme Lange, le monde est informé des injustices sociales, des événements politiques et historiques et des célébrations sportives. Mais qu'en est-il de son rôle dans l'art ? La photographie journalistique prend alors cet élément de narration et en fait de l'art. Qu'elle soit largement reproduite ou non, l'héritage des œuvres réside dans le moment choisi de la capture et permet au spectateur de voir de l'œil de l'artiste.
