This exhibition gathers 35 recent works from the art project LSYTSDA/ Lo siento, yo tampoco soy de aquí (I'm Sorry I'm not From Here Either). Drawing on firsthand interviews with migrants across Europe, each piece transforms personal testimony into a “coin” that interrogates notions of belonging and value. Visitors will encounter an eclectic array of approaches in these 35 sculptural paintings, each carefully crafted on treated pine wood, cut into circular discs 26 cm in diameter and 2 cm thick.: from bold abstractions that dissolve the face into pulsating color fields, and naïve, almost childlike renderings, to meticulously crafted hyperrealist portraits.
Embedded within these “coins” are fragments of spoken word—direct quotes that bring socio-economic realities and emotional truths into sharp relief. The arbitrary monetary amounts assigned to each work serve as a powerful metaphor for ethnic penalization and the unequal valuation of human life based on race, class, or origin. Echoing Joseba Achotegui’s concept of the “Ulysses syndrome,” the series voices the grief of displacement, the loss of language and homeland, and the daily estrangement endured by migrants.
Yet these pieces also constitute an open-ended exchange: collectors may acquire a coin today and, at a later date, return it in order to receive another available work. This playful system of symbolic economic circulation underscores the project’s invitation to ongoing dialogue, transformation, and connection. Through an explosion of color and form, 35 Monedas offers a poetic exploration of otherness, where art, language, and currency intertwine to challenge our assumptions about value and belonging.
These pieces have been created to function both individually and by forming multiple panels with others from the same series, adaptable to the characteristics of the space. The gallery offers special pricing for multiple acquisitions. Beyond their conceptual value, pieces from this series have been valued and are part of interior design projects around the world.
The exhibition is available to view online, with discounts offered for multiple acquisitions, and in person at Estudio San Froilán in Ourense by appointment.
