Charles van den Eycken, born in 1859 and died in 1923 in Brussels. Called Duchêne, was a renowned Belgian painter specializing in paintings representing cats.
His grandfather Frans was a decorative painter and his father, also called Charles, was a successful landscape painter in the 17th century Dutch style.
He was first a pupil of his father and then of Joseph Stevens, a realist painter of animals, at the Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. Later, he also studied at the Academy of Louvain. From 1881 he exhibited regularly at the Salons of Brussels, Liège, Ghent, Antwerp, as well as in the Netherlands, Germany, and Spain. He painted several paintings for Queen Marie-Henriette of Belgium.
