Biography
Xavier Collet is a Belgian painter, teacher and screen printer. While still at university, he discovered graphic design and street art. Discovering a real passion for this world, he finds great delight in the observation of urban posters, taking his inspiration from them.
Xavier Collet is not affiliated with any movement but his style is undeniably close to street art. In particular, the artists Jack Villeglé, Speedy Graphito and Mimo Rotella have influenced his work and artistic practice.
Xavier Collet began his artistic career in the collective “Eklektik Guys”, creating posters for concerts. He had the opportunity to experience live screen printing, and acquired a few basic concepts in video installation.
The artist uses varied media, including paper, wood, linen or even posters found in the street. He works in several stages, combining screen printing, painting, collage… The stencil is an essential tool in his artistic production.
Xavier Collet represents portraits of famous people, which he distorts or caricatures. Thus, famous American actresses, pop culture idols and comic book heros are introduced into his delirious, off-the-wall world. He also uses old propaganda posters, stamps and logos of multi-national companies, whose visual codes he reappropriates.
