Biography
Nature and the process of creation and destruction are the constant subjects and themes of my work. Using mixed media on paper, I construct images of nature to be dissected, altered, and reassembled. My current process allows the image to maintain its integrity while revealing the image in tiny, shifted fractions. The exposed components ask one to get closer and slow down “as you would in nature" to appreciate the details; the building blocks hidden within the “big picture."
I study nature's creations during the planning and building process, then study my own creations during destruction and reconstruction. Dissecting is like zooming in to see the pixels that make up the image on a screen or the Ben-Day dots that color a printed cartoon. Appreciating ingenuity and unconventional techniques, I am driven to experiment, push, and mix method and media, abstraction and design. Creative trials produce an ever-growing variety of directions and aesthetics in which I move. The results are ever-evolving, but the fundamental process remains grounded, as in nature: create, destroy, create. My techniques and applications include, but are not limited to, those used in fashion design, weaving, drawing, photography, graphic design, film editing, pyrography, and woodworking. I grew up in Carp, Ontario and after living in Toronto, Ottawa and Los Angeles, USA, I am based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
