Biography

Jean-François Bottollier is a French artist born in 1957 in Grenoble. He lives and works in the Lyon area. Painting has always accompanied man. He has devoted himself entirely to it for about ten years, although he has been exhibiting for a little over 20 years.

Jean-François Bottollier is an enlightened autodidact. His influences are numerous, with a particular attachment to the Middle Ages, which is one of the leading threads for his pictorial inspirations, Flemish primitives, Bosch in mind, sacred art, and his inclinations for a certain excessively Rabelaisian excessiveness.

Other forms of artistic expression are also sources of inspiration, especially music or literature. His lyrical "mannerism" crosses themes that he digs in a bulimic, almost obsessional way, pretexts for a singular form of introspection.

It is the human nature and its condition that he explores as so many self-portraits, thematic themes and canvas.

His strange characters, disproportionate and twisted bodies, rough, primitive faces askew, only differentiated by their sexual attributes, are archetypes, symbols. They are the expression of our part of animality and monstrosity as much as of our beauty, our grace.
