Laurent Bergues is a French artist born in 1965 in the territory of Belfort who lives and works in Gap in the Southern Alps.
After beginning as an illustrator of fashion and design, then a career as a graphic designer and poster artist, Laurent Bergues ended up returning to his first love, abandoning digital photography in favor of painting.
Thus, he shares his life for fifteen years between teaching and artistic production, pictorial. He exhibits regularly in France but also in Switzerland since 2012.
The work of Laurent Bergues can be called semi figurative. It starts from a stain, a trace, thrown, according to the weave of the paper, of the canvas. Then come traits and gestures that give birth to forms that become bestiaries, portraits, bodies too. Tasks and traits interact, intersect and intermingle.
Laurent Bergues does not premeditate anything. He lets himself be guided by his feelings, his unconscious, allowing time to do his work. He follows the hazardous path born of the stain, the coulure, abandoning a time the canvas to better come back, playing different levels of light of the day. He uses ink, acrylic, chalk, the technique is at the service of the gesture and the emergence of subjects, as he likes to remind: "the little in the service of efficiency".
The works of Laurent Bergues evoke life, movement. Sensibility and sensuality are at the end of the road.
