Biography

Ivan Schwebel was an American-born Israeli painter whose work reflects a unique blend of Jewish heritage, biblical symbolism, and contemporary life. Born in West Virginia, he began painting while stationed in Japan as a U.S. Army information officer during the Korean War. There, he studied under a Zen master, Kimura Kyoen, whose influence remained present in the composition and atmosphere of many of his works.

After returning to New York, Schwebel initially planned to study painting at NYU, but a conversation with artist Philip Guston led him to pursue art history instead, while continuing to paint independently. He later studied at the Institute of Fine Arts before relocating to Israel in 1963, settling in a stone house in Ein Karem, Jerusalem, where he lived and worked for the rest of his life.

Schwebel's art often combines modern urban scenes from Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and New York with timeless biblical figures like King David and Job. His expressive style and powerful color choices brought to life complex narratives, Jewish legends, and historical events, including works addressing the Holocaust and Jewish exile. His technique was hands-on and traditional, mixing his own pigments to achieve rich, luminous effects.

Though his romantic and emotionally driven approach stood apart from the dominant Israeli art trends of his time, Schwebel's work gained recognition and was featured in major exhibitions at the Israel Museum, the Tel Aviv Museum, and other prominent institutions in Israel and the U.S. His legacy continues to resonate through a vast and original body of work that bridges history, identity, and imagination.
