Biography

Tom Dixon was born in Tunisia in 1959 and is a world famous British designer. He began his studies at Chelsea College of Art and Design but dropped out before graduating. He has had one of the most unusual career histories. He became a guitarist in a rock band and worked in a disco at night. During the day he learned to weld in a garage.

His career began with creation of furniture and sculptures in recycled metal , which he recovered in Chelsea. 20 years later, he became artistic director of the company Habitat and won success as a self-made man. Meanwhile, his S chair made him a famous designer. At the head of his own company, he began creating objects in neo-industrial style, which was a reflection of his passion for raw material and arts and crafts.

His creations made him win the Maison&Objet designer award in 2014. His works are also part of various museums like Victoria and Albert Museum in London, MoMA in New York but also Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. He has been docteur honoris causa at the Birmingham University since 2004 and University of Arts in London since 2007.
