American artist Betsy Enzensberger has become well known for her realistic, larger-than-life sculptures of dripping, frozen treats and other sweet-toothed delights.
Resin looks like candy. It looks delicious and sweet. The shiny exterior has a wet, melting quality. Her Melting series relies on the childlike lure of sweet, sticky lollipops and popsicles to artificially instill intense desire. The colorful confections practically beg to be rescued and consumed. Bringing the kitsch, pop art theme to the 3D realm, her sculptures have a tangible, irresistible quality that delight the onlooker.
Her exhibition schedule has been extensive since 2000 across the United States and since 2018 Retrospect Galleries has been thrilled to bring this artist to the international stage with its touring gallery program.
ARTIST STATEMENT
“Resin – I love it. It's beautiful, sexy, mysterious. There's just something about it I can't resist. I dream about it. I want to touch it. I want to eat it."
"I currently sculpt larger-than-life melted treats, such as Ice Cream Cones, Lollipops and Popsicles. Recently, I added a series of bananas to the mix too. Everything is made from cast resin, which is medium that I discovered about 10 years ago. (Before that I was a painter, but that's old news.) Once I got my hands on this mysterious new material it was instant love.
Someone asked me recently why I love resin so much. I mean, it's messy, toxic and notoriously difficult to use. The challenge is what interests me. Overcoming obstacles, making mistakes then fixing them, being challenged by environmental conditions, injuries, studio disasters. These are all daily occurrences. In the end, I'm left with this beautiful, nostalgic, colorful, glittery sculpture. It's a love affair."
