Artwork location: Canada

Carved from a block of reclaimed Western Red Cedar, the wood material contains a history after its life as a tree. What went on during its use for humanity, I do not know, but cutting into the aged block to reveal the present form was a meaningful task nonetheless. What was discovered was an intriguing coloration consisting of a dark system coursing through one side of the block. This, now at the bottom of the sculpture, adds to the aesthetics and visual balance of the form. The loose grain lines, while making carving more challenging, impart to the surface a pleasing, alternating contrast, reminding of sound waves or ripples in water.

The form itself I found to be extremely sensitive. Every rounded corner and surface curvature could not be altered in its unified relationship with the rest of the three-dimensional object, lest the design be diminished. In transitioning from the drawing on paper to the form in the round, the particular curves and corners were found to either emphasize the tension of the part or concede to its local shape; thus contributing to the whole dynamic interplay of tension and resolution contained in the form.

It is of course ironic that there are clearly two distinct forms being represented, however through their act of interpermeation become connected into one whole. The unity of the piece is thus illustrated by both this physical connection and the "shared" or symbiotic space ("overlapping" volume). Another irony is found within the form's structural balance, which suggests a greater order beyond the two individual parts "unbeknownst to them".

This form works well with a variety of lighting situations. The softwood surface is prone to scratches so careful handling is required.

Presentation

Upon completion of an honours degree in Design from York University / Sheridan College in 2005, Mike lived in Japan to deepen his studies of the unique culture. After his return to Canada, the deeply imprinted memories of the Japanese gardens, architecture and arts began to emerge through his woodcraft and visual arts. The wood sculptures Mike has been carving since 2017—inspired by yoga, modern art and metaphysical philosophy—have been well received from the beginning of their career and have continued to mutate and evolve ever since. The work has been shown in YVR International Airport; at Ki Gallery in Cully, Switzerland; Craft Council of British Columbia; and Dalbergia: Fine Wood & Objects; and is on permanent display on the Ritz-Carlton Super Yacht Evrima, in Infinity House in Boca Raton - Florida, and in the lobby of Suncadia Resort in Washington.
