Is photography art?
When I see Lut Moerenhout's work, my answer to this question is an emphatic 'yes'. Moerenhout does much more than simply record reality, she creates her own reality. She makes images. She interprets, enhances and develops to create unique imagery, which transcends the 'beautiful image'. Moerenhout uses the medium of photography as a painter uses a brush.
This leads her to create images that are not typically aesthetic, but rather, confront us head on. They put us face to face with loneliness and despair, as well as beauty and details that would be easily overlooked by the average viewer. Moerenhout observes, captures and then gets to work. Architecture and landscapes suddenly become the outline of a cage or an unsettling horizon. There is always a human figure present, looking somewhat lost and bewildered. And these are exactly the emotions the viewer begins to feel as they stand in front of Moerenhout's art.
