Biography

Born in Bogotá, Colombia in 1982, Brooklyn-based María Berrío is known for her large-scale collages created from the intricate layering of Japanese pattern paper. Aiming to provoke questions about global migration and cross-cultural relations, Berrío produces dream-like compositions in which flora, fauna and mythical creatures are often present.

Berrío completed her BFA in 2004 at Parson School of Design and received her MFA from the New York School of Visual Arts. Her work is included in the permanent collections of many international institutions including the Whitney Museum of American Art, Shanghai's Yuz Museum, and the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art. In 2023 a solo exhibition of her work will be held at ICA Boston.
