Jacques Beneich
France • 1950
Presentation
Jacques Beneich wanted to become a pilot, but he joined an advertising agency where he discovered photography.
After an English BA of at Censier and a few tries to make it in the rock'n'roll scene, he dedicates his career to his passion for photography. He discovers very quickly the power of photography in all its forms, from reportage to still life, but his favorite part of it is revealing people's profound and hidden nature.
He meets Jacques Malignon and through him, he gets to know fashion photography, and they go to New York together in 1980.
He works with his mentor in the New York studio, and he finds himself plunged in the craziness of the '80s, with brief encounters, sleepless nights but also of intense working periods and no sleep. In this atmosphere of excess of this new universe he develops his photographic style, his sense of colors, of bodies and light.
He returns to Paris, and specializes in fashion photography and pworks between Milan, New York and the Carribean.
In 1989, he makes the acquaintance of many jazz musicians. He is captivated by the deep emotions on the faces of these jazz and blues players. He produces portraits, and they seem to be the very antithesis of the light, glimmering, smiling and ephemeral fashion world. He pursues his career in fashion, but he also takes portraits of personalities for news agencies and popular magazines.
Whether he captures the voluptuousness of women bodies or touching visions of artists, Jacques Beneich has a unique perspective. A gaze that transports the viewer, beyond the surface, and that tries to decypher the mystery of these transient emotions.
The artist died on August 7th, in 2017.
