Claude Como

Claude Como was born in Marseille in 1964 then lived in Ivory Coast until she was 16. She lives and works in Marseille.

What strikes you when you discover Claude Como's work is his desire to sort, list, list. For 30 years, in fact, Claude Como has worked most often in series: the Szondi test (6 series of 48 portraits of psychopaths, 1990-1992), Enlarged fragments of anatomy (1996- 1999), Rosacerdoce (an installation of 1000 paintings representing a rose in the greenhouse in Saint Cloud park, 2004), Landscapes (2013-2016), etc.

This work on sets, which implies long-term involvement and complete immersion in a subject, reflects a universal need - exacerbated in the artist - to find answers to what is beyond us. A touching approach, because it is utopian, to make an inventory in order to better understand what surrounds us and to capture the infinite possibilities offered to us by living things.

An artist who values the plurality of mediums

This is particularly the case for Gaia (Work in Progress) started in 2018, which Galerie Lazarew has the honor to present in November 2019, as part of a first collaboration with the artist.

Here, it is a question of diving into the heart of mother earth, mother earth, where humans, animals and plants intermingle, where sensuality, life and death roam in a silent ecosystem. With Claude Como, this silence, far from being associated with absence or death, disturbs because it is powerfully alive.
